The new 2017 BMW 6 Series

BMW_6-series2017_12017 will see a new 6 Series, which at the moment has a codename, being released. From the initial images the car looks spectacular. The car will also a lot lighter and will come across as a sportier model too when compared to the current six series.

A change of image

Upgrades to the next generation 6 Series will be so fierce that they will be designed to be within direct competition with Porsche. This would represent a major redesign for the current range. At the moment the Coupe, cabriolet and the Gran Coupe are more aligned to being grand tourers rather than being sporty.

So why have BMW decided to change the image of the 6 Series line-up? Many fans believe that the range looks overweight, too bulky and do not have an overall suitable place in the market.

There are set to be three different body styles with the new generation. These will be a coupe, a cabriolet and a Gran Coupe, which are under the codenames of G15, G14 and the G16 respectively.

Addressing the issue of being too bulky, the coupe and the cabriolet models will come down in size. They will not change too dramatically however. The 640i Coupe is likely to weigh around 1,560 kilos, with the soft-top weighting 1,700 kilos. The Gran Coupe model will be the exception to the rule however, with it being made larger for a more spacious interior.

Future six series models will be based on a brand new advanced modular architecture. It has been renamed as CLAR recently. It will be the future underpinning for BMW models. The phrase CLAR represents an advanced type of matrix. It adopts carbon fibre material and high strength steel.
