The BMW i5 set to be released in 2015

Following the announcement of the BMW i3 and BMW i8, BMW are now set to develop a new i5.

The i3 and the i8

The new set of electric “i” Series vehicles are sure to make a huge impact across the world when they are released. We can expect the i3 to go on sale at the end of next year with the supercar i8 being sold in 2014.

When rumours circulated around the automotive industry that a BMW i car was on it’s way, many believed that the new car would be a sporty saloon type of vehicle (like the Audi A5 Sportback). It would appear that the new BMW i5 is more similar to the likes of the Toyota Prius.

Unofficial images

Unofficial pictures show the BMW i5 having a very distinctive shaped grill on the bonnet of the car, similar to the BMW 1 Series M coupe. Not much can be concluded from the images shown. Everyone will have to wait until BMW officially release images.

The i3 and the i5

Comparing the i3 and the i5 is almost like comparing the Ford Focus and Ford Fiesta. The i5 will basically be a larger version with an extended bonnet as well as a larger wheelbase. The boot space will also be more spacious whilst containing sliding rear seats.

Same build and technology

All technology and material will be the same. Expect the car to contain carbon fibre reinforced plastic construction to enhance it’s green capabilities. The engine is also expected to adopt the same technology, with it being no different in terms of functionality.

Power

Some reports claim that the i5 will produce 167 BHP and 184 lb-ft of torque from it’s electric motor. A 3 cylinder ranger extender engine will also be included, which will be a 1.5 litre turbo diesel capable of bringing out 89 BHP.

Although production and sales are a long way away, prices may start from £42,000.

Other rumours claim that BMW will bring out an i4 in the near future too. What next? A BMW i2? Either way we can’t wait for the next generation of BMW electric vehicles to be released. The new i Series promises to be something quite special.
