Spartanburg is BMW’s number one factory in America

BMW’s Spartanburg plant has been named the companies number one plant in the United States of America. In total, the plant has managed to produce 255,359 models so far this year. This is a difference from 113,224 compared to the same period last year, representing a massive 80% increase.

On track to reach the yearly target

The yearly target is said to stand at 270,000. The 7,000 employees at the Spartanburg plan are steadily reaching that goal after some hard work all year round. Some sources claim they are set to smash that target and produce an outstanding 280,000 vehicles this year, despite the month of December having the festive period where a number of closures will occur.

Spartanburg factories statistics

  • BMW X3 – 11,349
  • BMW X5 – 9,650
  • BMW X6 – 3,680

Total amount of cars produced – 24,679

Major investment

The sudden amount of production increase is thanks to a $750 million investment into the Spartanburg factory from BMW. Cars produced here are not all destined towards the American market.  70 per cent of the production within the plant will eventually be exported to 130 countries throughout the world. BMW’s export business alone generates a profit of $4 billion annually to the American economy.

Production from rival companies

According to manufacturer reports, General Motors have produced 2.9 million vehicles in 2011 with Ford producing 2.4 million vehicles in the first eleven months of this year. Chrysler also performed well by producing 1.8 million vehicles.

MINI and Rolls-Royce

BMW sales worldwide have increased by 7.7 per cent, according to some sources. The company’s other brands of MINI and luxury division Rolls-Royce combined with BMW sales rose by 4.5 per cent this year, representing a brand new record for the company.

Ian Robertson, a member of the BMW AG Board of Management commented on the company breaking the record for the first time since the global economic downturn. He said “We have already sold more vehicles in the first 11 months of this year than in the whole of 2010 and we have also broken our sales record from 2007 – 1,500,678. This puts our record sales target for the full year of more than 1.6 million vehicles well within our reach.”

BMW are making great progress in America and across the world with their luxury vehicles at present. They have their Spartanburg plant to thank.
