No UK car manufacturers Brexit ready, industry warns

k-1The British motor industry has issued a warning that of all the UK car manufacturers, “no one would confess to being Brexit ready”.

The chief executive of the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT), Mike Hawes has gone on record to say that his members are “increasingly concerned” about the UK leaving the EU on World Trade Organisation (WTO) terms, since Prime Minister, Theresa May published the government’s latest Brexit white paper.

The chances of the UK leaving the EU on a “no deal’ Brexit have increased in recent weeks; should this happen, Britain would switch to WTO terms instead of staying in the Single Market, the customs union or the FCA. This would mean the introduction of tariffs on trade between the EU and the UK on cars and their parts.

The industry has appealed to the government to provide greater clarity on the future of the diesel engine in the UK, so manufacturers know their viability in light of incoming restrictions on the fuel form.
